About the Conference
The 2012 NWRI Clarke Prize Conference, organized by the National Water Research Institute, highlighted “Research and Innovations in Urban Water Sustainability.” Held on November 2, 2012, the conference featured presentations and panels from the NWRI Clarke Prize Laureates and representatives from local water and wastewater utilities that focused on identifying, developing, and managing sustainable water supplies in the urban setting.
The crowning event of the conference was the Clarke Prize Award Ceremony and Lecture, where we honored bioremediation expert Pedro Alvarez of Rice University with the 2012 Clarke Prize for excellence in water research. Alvarez was selected as the 2012 recipient because of global leadership and contributions to enhancing water resource sustainability through water pollution control. The prize consists of $50,000 and a medallion. He was the nineteenth Clarke Prize recipient.
There were over 135 attendees at the conference, representing consulting agencies, government agencies, manufacturing firms, water and wastewater utilities, universities, and others.
In addition, during lunch, NWRI presented the fifth NWRI Award of Excellence to the Orange County Sanitation District for the successful completion of its 10-year Secondary Treatment Program.
